GPS vs HSI

I have my moving map GPS connected to my D180 which gives me the TRK and NAV mode options for the autopilot. This also gives me a fictional HSI display, which I have no experience with (VFR pilot), and frankly find quite confusing. Does the HSI provide any useful capability over the GPS? The latter seems like it is so much simpler and more intuitive. I just want to be sure I'm not missing out on something.

A (quarter) million pilots, and I'd probably guess you'd be split on opinions on this. The HSI is basically gives you your relative position with respect to your desired course at a glance. GPS definite gives you more situational awareness in lots of ways, but many still find the HSI a useful tool. Maybe a little less so in VFR.
