Is this a proper cable to use with the 180 for serial to USB conversion?

Looks about right. I ordered mine with the EFIS, so I'm pretty sure you can be SURE by ordering through them.

The D180 comes with a cable included in the price if you get it new.

That cable should also work OK, and the radio shack and wal-mart ones work OK too.

I got mine new from SteinAir. I guess I should call Stein and ask where my cable is.

I just got around to trying to connect my 180 to the computer. As soon as it connects the compter flashes one the "shutting down because of a major error" messages and restarts.

That sounds like a Windows issue, unfortunately. You might try using a different computer if you can get your hands on / borrow one.
