I just upgraded from a 396 to a 496. With the 396 I was getting the glideslope readout on the Dynon(120) as it should be, but when I installed the 496 the glideslope does not show on the dynon. All other GPS information (crosswind, ground speed, etc) shows on the 120 in magenta, so I know the GPS is feeding the Dynon.

Look through the 496 setup menus carefully. You might compare the setup menu in your 396 to the 496, and see if there are any differences.

I think I've read this somewhere before - Garmin may have "nerfed" the functionality specifically to remove that.

Garmin did not nerf it...it is there.  It is also still in the new Aera model.

Check your settings.  Specifically around the VNAV function.  Also check to ensure that the advanced NMEA setting is set to NORMAL not FAST.

You also must have an active waypoint in the flight plan.

Do you see the VNAV indicator on the GPS map screen when you expect to have VNAV guidance?  If not, your settings are not correct on the GPS.

The VNAV has to be setup on the GPS495/496 - second TAB on the Setup menu.

I have the Interface set to Aviation IN/NMEA & VHF Out and the GPS495 TX is split between SV and the iCOM 210. The GPS495 aviation frequecy database is sent to the radio.

My advanced NMEA is set to FAST (9600 baud) so there are limited NMEA sentences sent (RMB, RMC, RMZ and RMH). Routes and DirectTO show up on the HSI. Probably what's missing is a true CDI. There is no course deviation indicated on the HSI. VNAV shows up though.
