430W + SV XPDR for ADS-B status

Plane is down for annual condition inspection, and I'll pull my 430W and take it over to the avionics shop to get the firmware updated to the latest greatest version, but just wondering...what's the status on the ADS-B or ADS-B+ or whatever it's called output from the Garmin and its use by SV for ADS-B Out?

I recall that an earlier thread mentioned this as something that was being worked...just wanted to find out what's up.

I think you mean $95, don't you?

That's what the local avionics shop quoted me.

Even at 95, it's ridiculous...I ought to be able to do it myself (like I can with every other piece of avionics in the plane).

Part of my reason for asking is...I don't want to do this TWICE. If we're waiting for another Garmin firmware update, then I'll defer. If it's on the Dynon side, then I'll go ahead and do it now.

Steve,
We are about 90% sure that we will be able to use the 430W's latest firmware and demonstrate compliance. The 10% is just because we aren't done yet and things could happen.

I'll check the circumstances but yes it was $950 :-/

Then he got ripped off, if it was simply a software update to a 430W. As I said, the local avionics shop quoted me 1 hour of tech time, 95 bucks.

Aaaah, Steve

You mentioned Firmware earlier & now software - the Garmin $950 was in reference to Firmware not software as you talked about in your last post   :-?  The unit was shipped to Garmin & return shipping was added too :)

Well, I don't know how the Garmin is architected and what is contained in *firmware* in something like an FPGA or what have you, versus what is contained in *software* and stored in EEPROM, so I admit I did use the terms somewhat interchangeably, which was wrong. I was speaking only of the update per Garmin bulletins recently which updated the software to 5.something-or-other.

I am unaware of any bulletins on updating firmware which require shipping back to Garmin, but then maybe he had a very old unit which needed upgrading to WAAS or something else, who knows?

I just confirmed from my guy in the US - basically  if you ship a unit (in this case a 430) to Garmin the charge is $950 for them to 'look' at it.  What a local avionics shop charges for software updates is a whole different ball game.
We should go back to discussing all things DYNON, why go anywhere else (except for TSO'd Navigators) if you don't have to ?  :)

I was able to send my 430W to John Stark to have the upgrade done for the proper output for ADSB. It has since passed the FAA's data check (confirmed on Christmas eve no less). I believe it was $50 plus shipping if I recall correctly.

:D   :D    :D

Something like this would be GREAT news to many of us. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Any timeframe for this? I haven't yet connected the wire from the 430W to the XPDR (well, I did, way back when, when I split a single serial line to feed my SV ARINC, the D6 and the XPDR, but then found out the format was wrong for the XPDR, so I'm just using SV GPS for that for the time being) because crawling under the panel to get to the harness is a pain, but if it's working *now*, then I'll go ahead and do it. Otherwise, I'll wait until it actually works (never do today what you can put off until tomorrow LOL!).

Steve,

It "works" right now.  The only thing lacking is the last tidbit of FAA compliance for 2020.

The report you get back from sending an email to:

9-AWA-AFS-300-ADSB-AvionicsCheck@faa.gov

will tell you that all the data is sent out and formatted correctly or not.

So we'll need an update to our system (including the transponder) that will enable our transponder to understand the 430W's ADS-B+ format output. So if you have that option in your 430W's software, you're primed for when we have our update available.

For now, you can either connect the wire and use the not-quite-compliant ADS-B format, or, just use SkyView's equally non-compliant position. Six of one, half dozen of the other basically.

I did a 430W software upgrade recently. The SB did not like the Garmin ADS-B+ output but is happy with the ADS-B output and all checks good for me with the FAA website. Note that they caught me about a year ago when I did not have the correct software in the SV transponder. After I fixed that the 430W was still outputting a data bit that was not right. I had ancient 430W software. The update fixed everything. But it looks like we still have to wait for another update from Dynon to be fully compliant with the 2020 requirements.

Be advised...my local avionics shop "upgraded" my 430W software while I was doing the annual...to version 5.10

I initially asked the tech who returned it to me about the version, and he said 5.10 was the latest. I went back to my email system, found the letter from Garmin, and sent it to the boss...the latest is 5.20, not 5.10...they were unaware of the latest version. Sigh.

Well, they're aware now...at least they're going to do the proper upgrade for no charge.

Anyway, make sure your shop knows which version is the most current.
