Hello:

I am installing the EMS-D10 in my panel and I do not understand what the +5 Excitation circuit is. Can you explain this? Also it says in the manual to allow for more than one splice into this line. Can I utilize a 6 circuit fuse block and run the +5 Excitiation line to the main post and then use the feeders for the sensors?

Thanks,

Glenn V.

Hi Glenn,

For various reasons, some sensors require a connection to +5V outside of the EMS-D10. In the case of the manifold pressure sensor, this connection serves to power the sensor. In other cases, it serves to "excite" a resistive sender through a pull-up resistor, giving a voltage that the EMS-D10 can respond to correctly. If the instructions call for a given sensor to have a resistor connected between one of its leads and the +5V excitation circuit, it's important to do so. This ensures that the sensor puts out a signal that the EMS-D10 can actually interpret.

Your idea of using a 6 circuit fuse block as a break-out point for the excitation line sounds like a good one. However, if you were planning on fusing these individual wires, that isn't needed. The +5V line is current limited to about an amp, so it wouldn't even pop a 1A fuse. If you're just using the fuse block to split up the line, that should be fine.
