I was laughing yesterday doing a little testing. I am making a little change to the gear leg fairings on my RV-6. I had done some top speed tests with the plane and get about 176 or 177 Knots wide open. I figured that since I now have the auto pilot working on the skyview I could get a more accurate top speed. I would hold altitude and course and go wide open and record the speed. Without the auto pilot it is sometimes a little difficult to hold exactly level wide open. So I tried it out and I couldn't get it over 165 or so, and I see that the RPMs are low also. What is going on? Then I notice a big message on the screen DECREASE POWER! It was climbing to prevent over speed. Duh! So I went into the menus and raised the top speed in the auto pilot menu. You all know what is coming. I did it again wide open, hold alt. Still not going over 168. The skyview put the top speed back down? I had to come home and read the manual about the auto pilot not allowing the top speed to be more than 95% of VNE. So I guess I have to play with the VNE and then the top speed. I am having a lot of fun playing with the system though.
