1. The VSI font and background to be as per ASI & ALT for easy observation.
2. It would be real neat if I could send serial data to the unit to drive the D100 from x-plane and then I could buy one for my simulator . Is it possible to do this and what is the protocol

It is not currently possible to drive the EFIS from an external source like x-plane.
