Guys,

I have been begging for an Altitude Alerter for some time, any progress on that front.

I went blasting through my altitude the other day and got yelled at by ATC.

HELP ME before I get busted!!!!!

It's not currently in the works, but we'll put it on the list to discuss for a future firmware update.

I would also be very interested in an altitude alerter function.  For extra points, add a short aural C chord tone that is triggered 1000 ft from the selected altitude when you are approaching it, and 300 ft from the selected altitude if you are moving away from it.   This is a standard function on transport category aircraft, and is very, very useful.

To expand on this, the logic might be as follows:

A brief tone +/- 1000 ft approaching bugged alt.  Alt window begins flashing

A brief tone +/- 300 ft approaching  bugged alt. Alt window stops flashing

A brief tone +/- 200 ft departing  bugged alt.  Alt window starts flashing

A contious beeping tone +/- 300 feet departing bugged alt and Alt window flashing

Tapping a button  stops the beeping and flashing.

My understanding is you have limited ability to generate tones, so Long/Short tones could be used to differentiate the alarms.

I will be happy to be the beta tester.

Help!!!!!

I was climbing 2000+ fpm in the Rocket Tues, (yes I am bragging, 'cause I was indicating 140kts!!! YIppeee!) and Ft Worth Center yells at me that I have climbed thru my altitude.!!!!

It makes no sense to add a Rocky Mt encoder just to get an alterter when all I need is a few lines of code in my Dynon....... But I gotta do something or I am gonna get busted.

Please Hurry,

I hate to be a grouch here, but...

Might you not benefit more by worrying less about gadgets and more about perfecting your basic piloting skills?

Just a thought...

I am certainly not Bob Hoover, and I make mistakes.  The premise of CRM is to acknowledge that we make errors, trap those errors before they become problems, and mitigate the consequences of the errors that escape the trap.

I routinely fly up to 18,000 ft, and cruise over 200 kts, with climb rates of 2500 fpm in the lower altitudes, and decent rates of 1000 fpm.  A flight profile similar to a King Air or a C-421. An Altitude alerter is a tool not a toy, and it is standard equipment on airplanes operating in that envelope.

The purpose of an altitude alerter is to prevent errors, and to trap the errors when we make them.

Doug,

Do any of the warbirds you fly have an altitude alerter, or do you stick strictly VFR so no one cares too much?

I'm certainly looking forward to getting an altitude alerter function, but the good news is that I'm building slowly, so I've got at least six months before I need it.

Kevin,

None of the Warbirds I fly have alerters, and I don't fly any of the single seat airplane high performance fighters IFR. That said, they don't climb that fast. At reasonable power settings, if you climb over 1000 fpm most of them will get hot. They do come down fast however...... The heavies all have a co-pilot and climb so slow that an alerter is needless.

The fighters need a overspeed bell at 250 kts, because that one is really tough in Mustang. 156 kts in the ATA is not only difficult, it dangerous. (and I'll deny it, but I ignore it) The most dangerous thing you can do in a Mustang is fly slow. Flown correctly (not legally) a Mustang has the destination made when you leave cruise altitude. Speed is life, altitude is life insurance.........

Single pilot IFR in a Rocket is busy. If ATC starts changing the plan it gets really busy.

I was leaving Waco TX this week with an "as filed" clearance. Center gave me a new routing and I was trying to type a intersection name in the G430 when Center called and "reminded" me that my assigned Alt was below me.......

You should come fly the Rocket sometime...... 156 KIAS in the ATA is tough in the Rocket too.....
