Altitude bug when A/P disengaged

Hi, guys... when I'm running the A/P in altitude mode and disengage the A/P, the altitude bug goes away. Is that by design? I would expect it would behave like the heading bug (go from "filled" to "hollow" but still stay at the previous setting). This would be useful when at an ATC-assigned altitude and disengaging the A/P. It does remember the altitude, so right now I just twist the value knob up a notch and back down to make the bug come back, so not a big deal, but curious whether it was done that way on purpose. Thanks...

It is by design, and it has to do with the altitude alerter, though, admittedly and embarrassingly, we don't remember the precise WHY.

It'll come to us just after we nod off tonight, I'm sure :)
