There are some older but still useful IFR GPS units that require a number of external annunciators and a switch to be legal for IFR. For example, the Apollo GX60 needs external MSG, PTK, OBS/HLD, APPRCH, and ACTIVE annunciator lights, driven by taking pins on the GX60 connector low; and a normally open external Hold switch which grounds a GX60 connector pin. These take up panel real estate, and it would be nice if the EFIS screen could display them, and one of the soft keys on the EFIS panel could be used as the switch. Is something like that going to be at all possible with the next (or for that matter the current) generation?
