ARINC converter

It would be my guess that when an ARINC converter is released for Skyview that it will be another small module which would communicate with the screens via the network connections through a splitter. Is development to the point where a release date is being considered? Will there be an additional cost for this unit? I am really looking forward to the HSI function being operational.

It will be a small module, and yes it will cost extra, probably in the range of $400-$500. If it were something we could have afforded to give in the base price of SkyView, we would have designed it into the screens.

The HSI and ARINC are independent in a sense. We will have HSI before the ARINC converter is out. It will allow serial devices to be displayed (GPS and the SL-30). Then the ARINC converter will come as an additional source to the HSI.

Our roadmap for features and dates is here:

I have a Garmin GNS 480. I believe this has a serial output and it is an IFR certified box. Will I be able to use this through the serial connection and have a full function HSI including glideslope/vertical navigation? It was my understanding the HS34 was required for the legacy units to output vertical guidance. If the Skyview can do this without ARINC it would be great. If so, why would the ARINC connection be required?

You can get all the NAV/ILS stuff off the box with just serial.

You can get GPS horizontal nav. But for GPS vertical nav, you need ARINC (they just don't send it out over serial at all). ARINC also gets you GPS steering, and auto-scaling of the HSI on approach. We do all we can for serial, but if it isn't on there, we can't show it.

None of this is different between the SkyView and the D10/D100 products.

The 430 only outputs NAV/LOC over ARINC which is why so many people need it. The 480, being an Apollo unit, is unique.

Then with the GNS 480 over serial will I get ILS display and track (when autopilot enabled)? Will the HSI display the ILS? Will it display the standby VOR/LOC on the second needle of the HSI using the serial? Will GPS/RNAV vertical guidance be displayed but not tracked or is it not even displayed until the ARINC 429 is enabled? When the ARINC 429 is enabled and GPS steering is active, will the autopilot fly the flight plan without requiring the pilot to update the HSI course at each waypoint?

Yes, Yes, Yes, No, yes ;)

There is no GPS vertical data on serial, period. Nothing to display or fly. Technically, the HSI always sequences to your next waypoint even without GPSS, but it will fly to the waypoint then turn, not begin the turn before the point and make a nice arc onto the next leg.
