AOPA had an article in the Nov 2009 issue about the certified ESI-1000 (electric standby instrument), called the Trilogy, from L3. It is to replace the backup steam gauges in the Cirrus, for instance. It does airspeed, altitude, and pitch. That's it for the basic unit.,
Cost - $15,000. If you want heading it can do it, but you shell out another $4500 for a remote magnetometer. Here is what it doesn't do:
No Rate of Turn
No Vertical Speed
No AOA capability
No Bus Voltage display
No option for a built-in backup battery
No slip and skid ball
I'll take the Dynon D6 for my experimental Glasair, thanks, for $1600 plus $90 for a Li-ion backup battery.
That $15,000 + $4,500 that L3 charges pays for a lot of government paperwork.
And, for that price, the instrument is still not certified for primary reference. It is BACKUP ONLY!!
It is amazing that Dynon produces such quality products, great customer support, and reasonable prices. How is it the the Dynon remote magnetometer is $100 and the L3 is $4500?
