You should try using the audio output from the AP74 pin 25 instead of the EFIS. When an AP74 or HS34 are installed, they take over sending audio for both the EFIS and EMS, so having the AP74 there may be disabling audio from the EMS. It probably also explains why you don't get AP audio. The next logical question would be to ask why it worked when it was pigtailed, but I don't have a clue without being able to see it. If using the AP74 output gets you all the audio you should be getting, then you decide if you want the 10k ohm potentiometer or not.
