Autopilot not getting altitude data

I have the D100 EFIS and AP74. It's in my PiperSport. Today on a return trip from a cross country the autopilot never acquired the Altitude data (stayed red/OFF). I was able to use the AP in heading mode only. My Garmin 696 which feeds the NAV mode died recently and I'm getting it replaced but that hasn't affected the ability to use Heading and Altitude modes with the autopilot. At least not until today. Perhaps I taxied out too quickly and it didn't have time to acquire. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

No, its not an acquisition of data problem. Sounds like an offline servo, or somehow it has lost it on the network. Do a network discovery, make sure you have a pitch servo in the network and then try to engage it while in the hangar.

Ok thanks, I understand now. Has to be a network configuration problem (doubtful as I've never accessed these set-up menus), a failed servo or wiring issue. Unfortunate as I have limited avionics resources to troubleshoot the problem locally.
