Backup battery inoperative

I'm getting my Dynon skyview installed and set up. I have the backup battery connected. The Backup battery voltage always show 0.0 volts and it does not keep the Skyview running when the power is removed. Do I need to enable the backup battery? What am I missing?

Thanks for helping.

Have you charged it? Connect the aircraft battery to a charger sufficient to maintain charging voltage with the Dynon on (which can be read from the Dynon). The Dynon should charge the backup battery. It will take quite a while if the backup battery is very low. I would double check connections since it does not seem likely the resting voltage of the standby battery is 0.0V. In any case, the Dynon will not charge the backup battery unless voltage on the bus powering the Dynon is above battery voltage. It is designed this way to prevent the charging of the backup battery draining your main battery.

Where are you able to access the backup batt voltage in the skyview? I would like to have this as a monitor point and it looks like you have it but I cannot find it in the settings.

Thanks

from pg 9-3 of latest install doc:
Battery Status Check
Enter the Display Hardware Information Page (SETUP MENU > LOCAL DISPLAY SETUP > DISPLAY HARDWARE INFORMATION) to check the status of the battery. The BATTERY STATUS line shows the voltage of the display’s backup battery.
An SV-BAT-320 is fully charged when it reaches 12.25 volts. Charging a completely discharged battery may take up to 4 hours. To conserve your aircraft battery, the SV-BAT-320 is only charged with SkyView detects your alternator/generator to be online.

Also, the backup battery will not charge unless the voltage into SkyView is 12.25V or above. You can check if it's charging on the same page where you can see the voltage. If it says "Standby" or anything besides "charging" then it's not charging. We do this so it doesn't drag down your aircraft battery before the alternator is online.

Any chance of an info widget using any of the gauges that can be placed on the ENG page to display the backup battery condition? - percentage wise rather than voltage.  :-?

I guess it don't matter if it can use one of the gauges it can show an in the green area.

That would be nice.

Backup battery status on the screen is definitely on the todo list.

I am not flying yet, but checked my back up battery after I read this thread to see what I came up with.

I have:

VOLTAGE: 12.04V
BATTERY STATUS: 00.00V
   CHARGE STATUS: NO BATTERY
INTERAL VOLTAGES: OK

Does "NO BATTERY" mean that Skyview is not recognizing that I have the back up battery installed?

That's technically correct, but, if the main voltage isn't above 12.25V, the display won't even try to charge the backup battery. Then, once you do have that level of voltage on the display, see if you then see a non-zero voltage on the Battery Status line.

I went and charged up the aircraft battery and turned the Skyview on to check to see if it would recognize the backup battery but here is what I get:

VOLTAGE: 12.67V
BATTERY STATUS: 00.00V
CHARGE STATUS: NO BATTERY
INTERAL VOLTAGES: OK

The engine is not running so the alternator is not generating electricity. But shouldn't the Skyview recognize that there is a backup battery installed? Not sure what the problem might be.

Thanks!

The battery has a protection circuit inside it and if the voltage gets too low, it turns off the battery and it reads 0V. SkyView can't tell this state from no battery.

Once you get above 12.25V, SkyView will try and charge the battery, even if there isn't one there. If there is one, this will get the voltage up, and it will suddenly pop from 0V up to about 9V. Then SkyView will know about the battery and will charge it normally, and will show you the state of the battery.

So, if your SkyView was reading 12.67V, then it should have been charging the battery, and it should have shown up. It does sound like something is up with that battery. Contact our tech support and we can get you a new one.
