Blank Screen on start up

Went out to fly today & when I powered up the avionics everything worked except the EMS120 - the screen was blank. I ran the engine for approx. 10 minutes, but the screen was still blank. Ckecked the fuse which was OK. Pushed the plane back in the hangar. A few minutes later I powered up the avionics again & the EMS 120 can alive & looked normal. The only thing I can think of it was a little cold outside, but not that cold, around 30 degrees F.

Are the screens temperature sensitive? It was cold but not really cold. I am in Calif. where we can fly all year round. I did not expect a problem brecause of temerature. My Garmin 296 screen was fine, no blank screen like the Dynon. Any idea what is going on????

They're not supposed to be, and most aren't, but there have been a few units throughout the years that haven't met the cold spec temperature spec. This is about the time of year we get a couple back. Give tech support a call at 425-402-0433 when you get a chance.

Also, Bob - do you have keep alive connected? Disconnecting this may help your behavior. If you have a GPS connected, your clock will then be updated to the correct time (since keep alive provides power to keep the clock correct) when you get a satellite lock.

Why would the keep alive cause start up problems? I thought that the only purpose was to keep the clock running. If this is a problem, is there a fix in the works?

The way it keeps the clock alive is keeping one of the processors in the unit powered all the time. If this processor gets locked up, it will never unlock until you remove all power, which means removing keep alive.

We are investigating why this can happen sometimes. It never happens in flight, only on power cycles, and unless you need keep alive (no GPS or EFIS in the plane), disconnecting keep alive doesn't have any other side effects.
