broken CHT wire

I managed to break one wire on one of the CHT ring probes while changing a sparkplug.

The wire broke at the spot where it joins the ring.  I opened the crimp and got the rest of the wire out. I notice that it  (and all the other probe wires are welded together at the tip with a little bead-like weld - gives me the impression that the thermocouple might require more than just electrical contact.
Also the ring is now deformed a bit and I would like to change it for a new one.

Two questions:
1. Can I just twist or crimp the wires back together and reinstall in the ring - or do I need a new CHT wire/probe assembly?

2. I can't buy locally the same heavy coated copper ring but can get automotive aluminium or maybe it's soft steel ones.  Can I use any ring or is there something special about the heavy copper ones? I presume it will be needed for max heat transfer - but just asking anyway :-?

Thanks

As long as that welded junction is still intact, you're safe splicing a wire back to itself. Just keep the splice as short as possible.

You're correct in your assumption about the ring serving to provide max heat transfer.
