Chart data for VFR pilots?

Hi gang,

Nice upgrade to the moving map and charts, but as a strictly VFR pilot I can't see paying $99/year for a bunch of IFR charts I'll never use, not to mention having then cluttering up the memory and trying to scroll through them when all I want is a 10-9 page. 


Any possibility of offering this option in the future?

The real value for VFR pilots are the 700+ official FAA airport diagrams and the over 5000 Flight Guide diagrams that cover practically all airports in the US, which is practically all of them.

We'll have more to say on the VFR side of things soon, but can't let the cat out of the bag just yet.

Also, what is a "10-9 page"?

Sorry, 10-9 is the code Jeppesen uses for their version of the FAA Airport Diagram. 10-9 for the "big picture" chart, then 10-9A, 10-9B, etc for more detailed charts like congested ramp areas, etc.


The real value for VFR pilots are the 700+ official FAA airport diagrams and the over 5000 Flight Guide diagrams that cover practically all airports in the US, which is practically all of them.

We'll have more to say on the VFR side of things soon, but can't let the cat out of the bag just yet.

I agree with you about the value of airport diagrams/10-9 pages, which is why I was excited to see a moving map coming for the SkyView. But after 25 years of flying professionally and recreationally, single-pilot/single-engine IFR is a risk I no longer choose to take, and I'm hoping your hint refers to an upcoming VFR-only package, similar to what Seattle Avionics already offers for Tablet PCs.

We are not planning an VFR only package. The price of $99 would only be slightly reduced, if at all. If you look at Seattle Avionics, you'll see that they generally charge $99 for just FAA airport diagrams, and $49 for FlightGuide diagrams, while we are at $99 for Airport Diagrams, FlightGuide diagrams, and all IFR charts. So you are not paying a premium for the "extra" IFR data.

Dynon subsidizes the $99 price in order to offer you an incredible price on our data, but part of what makes that possible is offering only one very reasonably priced package.

If there is interest we could offer an option to hide all the IAP, SIDS, STARS, etc from the charts list on the SkyView screen. We do already put airport diagrams first in the list, in priority order, and you can pop up the airport diagram by just pushing the knob on SkyView, so there isn't a lot of menu clutter from the additional data. You don't have to scroll past all the IAP's or STARS to see the AD.

Ok, thanks. At least having the AD on top is reasonable, looking forward to seeing what you have planned for the VFR side you hinted to.


Is there any way/plans to offer a way to demo the product before buying, similar to what is done with the MAP trial mode?

Very kind of you to offer, how about some images of what we'd see in a typical flight, say from a towered airport such as Bellingham WA, to a non-tower airport such as Arlington?

How do you rotate those plates so they appear in portrait mode and not landscape? It wasn't obvious for me how to do this (of course, I haven't read the manual cover-to-cover, yet)

The charts are always North Up, there is no manual rotation. You can zoom and pan, but not rotate. If you rotate, all the text rotates too and makes them very hard to read.

The airplane does show up on the chart at the current location if you are on the chart.
