Combining Serial Ports with Switch - Details?

A previous thread discussed combining the multiple Serial ports into a single port using a rotary switch.

Can someone explain to me whether I need to run all wires through the switch, or whether some wires can simply be joined together and only one needs to go through the switch?

A nice wiring diagram would be even better, along with a recommended switch for us wiring-challenged types!

Thanks!

:)

You'll want a dual-pole, dual-throw switch for the TX and RX lines. Ground can be left continuous to both instruments at all times (ie - just split it).

I presume that is only for 2 serial lines - I have 3 (including the logger).  I want to wire the switch, then mount the serial-to-usb adapter to a panel mounted female USB port.

But that gives me the info I need - Thanks!
