Constant Turn Indication

Just fired up my D100/EMS combination - all looks very, very nice :)

Remote magnetometer set up in an RV7.

AI shows a steady 10 - 15 degree left turn along with a yellow left turn signal at the top.

I skimmed through the installation manual and it refers to calibrating the magnetometer and the pitch, but not roll.

Fuselage is level, checked with spirit level.

Any suggestions ?

Hmm, that doesn't sound good.

We have a system inside that sometimes mean you see a turn rate bar or a slight tilt until you fly the unit some, but you shouldn't see a 10-15 degree bank generally. It should just be right, and there isn't a way to calibrate this in the field. There's a slight chance that it could be that far off though.

Our best suggestion would be to fly the unit for an hour and see if it gets better. If your plane isn't flying yet, your best bet is to call us up and send the unit back so we can take a look at it.

I note that the yellow turn rate bar is from older firmware. Have you had the unit for a while? No problem with that- just trying to figure out how/when this could have happened to the unit. You could try updating the firmware, but we don't have any known bugs like this that new firmware would fix.

Yep, we have had the unit for a year or so, just got round to putting power to it recently. Checked the fuselage with Neville ( the level ) and it was spot on, but the Dynon screen showed turn.

No panic, I was going to upload the latest stuff when we are closer to flying, probably later in the year - perhaps that will kick it's ass and get it flying straight.

Thanks for the quick reply.

If you have some time before you're flying and can confirm that the unit is displaying bank when the unit is definitely level, we could also have the unit back for a look. Give us a call at 425-402-0433 if you'd like to set up a return authorization.

I've had the same problem. In a D-10A that is a year or two old (not flying yet), I just uploaded the 4.0.1 firmware, and found it to have a bias indication for left turn (no bank). It did not seem to improve with time, and repeated for several power-ups. None of the previous versions (2.17, 2.19, 3.0.0) showed this.

This "learning the plane" algorithm that you describe -- is it something new??
Do I need to go back to old firmware ?? (since I'm not using EDC or DSAB)

The good news is that it linked up well with Garmin 327 xponder.

Thanks for any comments,
Tio Rico

It's not new. If it doesn't improve with a few more hours flight time, give us a shout at 425-402-0433.

Hi from Italy,

I just flown my CT with a brand new Dynon 100 (just 1 hour flying).
I notice the same problem on the initial flight (a constant left turn), but after an hour and two landings everything is looking much more better.
The question is: is it normal?
Thanks in advance, regards

Marco

A turn that is there on the artificial horizon or turn rate bar for the first hour or so on a brand new unit is somewhat normal. There is internal calibration that learns about your airplane. It will level out after a while of straight and level, coordinated flight.

A ball that is off is just broken. This will never correct itself.

thanks!

The ball is perfect, the terrain was about 5 to 10 degrees bank left for the first 20 minuts of flying. After a period of level flight the instrument looked going ok.
Thanks a lot
