Presently Garmin G3X database update for IFR use requires one thousand dollars per year subscription.  With the GNS 430wass GPS another $500 year from Jeppensen.
How does this compare with Skyview ?  And more to the point where does Skyview obtain its mapping data for screen presentation  ?  Is this presentation imported from the GPS ?

In the USA, database updates for airports, airspace, obstacles, and more is free. You just go to:

http://dynonavionics.com/docs/support_software_SkyView_Databases.html

And download them every 28 days. We get the data from the FAA for free (like all companies do) and pass it on to you at no charge. All of our GPS data is internal to SkyView. None of it comes from an external device.

Airport diagrams and sectionals are coming to SkyView soon and will be $99 a year. Georeferenced Approach charts and IFR charts will be $99 as well.

Neither SkyView nor the G3X are legal GPS navigators in IFR, so you do need to keep the 430 current if you are filing /G.

Here in the US, SkyView aviation and obstacle databases are free. We'll have geo-referenced IFR procedure charts (plates) and airport diagrams available for minimal cost (small hundreds a year) through Seattle Avionics next month with the release of our 7.0 software.

If you're going to fly IFR via GPS, though, you will need the certified GPS like the new GTN or 430W, and that's the database that you'll need to keep up to date to be legal.

Think of SkyView's native GPS capability as a really great VFR map, that today doesn't cost anything (and shortly will be pretty minimal)

On behalf of every cost-constrained pilot/builder out there, let me say...thank you thank you THANK YOU for keeping the database updates free! And another thank you for keeping the georeferenced charts as cheap as possible. It chaps my hide that we have to pay 600 bucks a year to Jepp for 430W data which comes from the government (and for which we've already paid via taxes).

THANK YOU!
