Course Select Problems with D180/496

I've installed the latest operating system on both my D180 and 496 as suggested by your techs but the problem persists.

When displaying the GPS on the HSI, the course select either:

1. Remains on 360
2. Stays on the previous course

After quite awhile (10-15min.) it sometimes swings to the correct course but sticks on that course if a new waypoint is selected. All other GPS information displays correctly including the CDI and RMI.

Any more suggestions?

99% of the time we have seen this it's because the output rate in the "Advanced NMEA Setup" is set to "Fast" instead of "Normal." The fast mode outputs reduced information that doesn't include the course line. Please check this and let us know.

Already did that. It fixed the problem the 1st time.

The problem has re-surfaced since I updated the D180 firmware, so I called your Tech guys. We went over all the settings on the 496 and nothing. They sugested that I update the 496 operating system. I did and the problem persists.

My friend has the exact same problem with his D180/496.

What do you do the 1% of the time?

The other 1% of the time we tell them to update their 496 firmware ;)

Seriously, we're kind of stumped. We have a 396 here that we'll have to play with some and see if we can reproduce it. Might be a D180 specific thing or I'd think we would have a lot more people complaining.

or maybe a 496 thing.

But as I already said, I updated the 496 firmware just a few days ago.

I'll update my friend's 496 and see if the problem persists in his plane as well.

We have lots of people with 496s and they work fine, so it's got to be some combination of 496 with a D180 or something else more unique about the setup. We'll look into it. Anything else interesting about your setup that might matter (Wired to a D100, SL-30, ???)

D180, 496, SL30, 330 all interfaced to get all the kewl functions.

Everything worked perfectly untill I updated the D180 firmware. Now everything works fine except the GPS course select...

Doubt this is it, but try going into the setup menu, then "HSI." Choose "EFIS serial" and change the input from "Auto" to NMEA on the port that has the 496 connected.

PilotKris,

Did you ever get a set of settings that corrected this behavior?

NO!

It still "freezes" on me at either 360 or the last course.

Interesting - can you get Garmin to provide you a flash to take you back to the PREVIOUS 496 software version? Maybe they "nerfed" it in this release...

"When all goes black, roll back!"
- old IT saying
