In the middle of June, when it looked like California was beginning to get control of the virus, my wife and I drove from southern to central California and stayed in a motel on the beach in Cambria. For the drive up, we took a picnic lunch and stopped at the Santa Ynez airport to eat at the outdoor picnic table beside the runway. It was so pleasant, we plan to fly back there for another picnic lunch; but in June we drove. On the way home, we ate in our car in a shopping center parking lot. That was not worth doing again. That has been the extent of our out-of-town travels. We have family in Texas and New York, and we thought a bit about renting a motor home to drive to see them. But our research showed us that is a very expensive way to travel, and that many people who travel by motor home spend the night parked in . . . (wait for it) . . . shopping center parking lots. Decision: not for us. In the past, we've flown commercial to visit family. But we're not comfortable doing that yet. One of my former flight instructors is now a pilot for a jet charter company. I'd be comfortable flying that way. But it'd be too expensive, by far, to do it. (Sad, for real.)

Isn't that what GA aircraft are for? :) Not that we've made very many trips, but the RV-7 is perfect for weekend getaways. And the FBOs bring the rental car to the plane, so no need to be inside with other people and risk getting sick. VRBO or AirBnB places usually have contactless "check-in".

Of course, all business travel is cancelled, so we're only talking personal travel, but seriously...light aircraft are ideal for these sorts of trips. Drive? *Never*.
