D10-A, HS34 hookup to GTX327

If I understand it correctly, pins 13 and 21 of the D-10A hook to the transponder to provide altitude encoding and the serial 2 of the HS34 are not used unless hooking up, say, an SL30??
I have the GNS430W hooked to the HS34. Using serial 1 for updates and not using serial 2....???
