Configuration: Dual D100's, Roll Axis AP, Garmin 496

I finally got around to doing the 5.4 upgrade and all was going relatively well until a user error or two and now I have a D100 that doesn't power up.

First I upgraded the non-master D100 with no real issues and followed the instructions to the letter.  Then moved over to the master and upgraded the D100.  When I started the upgrade, the non-master screen went to the the "Yellow Screen of Death".  Didn't think anything of it.  The master was successful but when I did the reload (as per instructions) to do the AP, it basically timed out the master went to the Yellow screen.  Couldn't talk to either D100 from the laptop.  Turned the power off and decided to let them discharge over night and try again (battery backup).

Came in the next day, and the screens came up fine.  All showed 5.4 except the AP.  Redid the Master, with the other D100 going to the yellow screen, and the AP updated just fine.  The master rebooted, the DSAB status showed all the devices (slave showed OFFLINE).  Couldn't get the slave to leave the yellow screen so I powered everything off and waited for the slave to drain.  In 20 minutes it turned off.

Now comes my first mistake -- the whole process took quite awhile and I did NOT have a float charger on the battery.  I figured I needed to try and start the plane.  No joy, although there was some power.  The slave D100 still did not power up.  Shut everything down and went and bought a Battery Tender.

Came back a couple days later, Battery Tender shows green, plane starts with no issues.  Still no slave D100.  The master has a DSAB error on power-up.  The DSAB status does not see the AP or other D100.

Update: the screen will flicker if I pull the breaker and push it back in. Also the DSAB config gives and error code of 3 and reports itself as standalone.

There's enough complexity here that you should probably start a dialog with tech support at either support at dynonavionics.com or 425-402-0433.

Dynon turned the unit around in about 4 days and all works well. They ended up reloading 5.4. Had my first test flight with it and really like the 'new' turn rate limit setting of 0. Seems to nail the course quicker and smoother!

Now my best guess as to why a perfectly good upgraded D100 went catatonic. It appears that my AP, which is slaved to the pilot D100, is connected serially off the copilot D100 -- not off the DB37. When I went to upgrade the AP from the master, the slave D100 got in a strange state. Probably waiting on data that never came. Too hot to check this out now. I'll wait till the fall to follow the wires.

At the time we designed the D10/D100 series, we went with the serial update method because it had some big costs wins at a component level (which leads to a big price win for you, our customers). If we had to do it all over again, we may have left out the serial update process in favor of USB or other memory card based solution - like SkyView now has - because the serial linktends to be a source of trouble with random computer/instrument serial port issues.

In a nutshell, you probably did nothing wrong, but you got hit by the unlucky dart of PC to instrument communication issues, which affects a very small percentage of customers occasionally. Sorry for the round trip that your instrument required.

No worries --hindsight is good thing that allows y'all to improve the next generation. Also, the level of service Dynon provides minimized the invconvenience. I'm still a happy customer :)
