Does the commun functions of the D120 and D180 need two sets of sensors when the two screens are installed in the same aircraft ?
Thanks

Yes. Because it's impractical to do this, most people don't really set up a D120 and D180 in a single aircraft. Instead, consider that if you use a FlightDEK-D180 and an EFIS-D100, you have a truly redundant set of primary flight instruments - the things you care about most when things start to go bad.

We were planning to install a D180 with a D120 to provide engine monitoring back-up. We don't need flight instrument back-up as it is mandatory here in the UK to have back-up analogue Asi, Altimeter and compass. Our question relates to the best method of achieving engine monitoring back-up (in the unlikely event that the D180 might fail) without resorting to analogue instruments. Is there any way that the D120 could be used for this without having separate senders, e.g. with some sort of bifurcated arrangement between senders and panel units? Alternatively is there any other way of achieving engine monitoring back-up using a second Dynon display? Presumably, if separate senders are used, a D180 and D120 on the same panel would work completely independently.

There's only really two ways to go about this:

Separate senders or a huge switch to switch some of the senders.

Many senders are powered, like the pressure senders and many temp senders. These can't be hooked to two instruments at the same time because the dual power sources will mess with it. It doesn't matter if it's two Dynon EMS units, or an EMS and an analog instrument. Only one instrument per sender.

Other senders can be doubled up. This includes the tach, manifold pressure, thermocouples, fuel flow, and maybe a few others.

So for the ones that can't, you can either install doubles, or you can install a switch that directs the sender to the other instrument when one fails. You won't be able to have the backup instrument turned on normally though, since it would be throwing alarms left and right because it would see false values most of the time.

If you do double up senders, the D180 and D120 will be totally independent.
