D180 - HS34 Interface

I've just installed the D180 and HS34 and am having a problem getting them to communicate.

When trying to configure the D180 for the HS34 I get the message that the HS34 is not connected.

I've checked the DSAB wiring (blue/green pair) continuity and pinout details and also the power and ground connections to the HS34 - all are as specified.

I don't have any sensors connected at present but I can't see that this should affect comms between the D180 and the HS34 - am I wrong?

Am I missing something or do I have a dud HS34? :'(

Any advice would be appreciated,

The first thing to check is if they HS34 is lighting up. When you apply power to it, ALL the lights should come on, including all the backlights and the NAV and GPS lights. If they don't, it either doesn't have power or is broken.

If all the lights come on, all that's left is to hook DSAB A to DSAB A and DSAB B to DSAB B. If you have a D180, be aware that only the DSAB wires on the D25 work- the ones on the D37 are not active.

When you configure DSAB in the D180, if it finds the HS34, all the lights (except maybe the GPS or NAV) will go out. This is how you know it's online.

None of the D180 sensors nor any other connections to the HS34 need to be made.

Let us know how it goes.

The second thing to check is, which pair of DSAB wires from the D180 did you use?  At least one pair is non-functional; you will need to search the posts or the wiki to learn which pair.

Thanks for the prompt responses guys - the problem has been resolved.

As I said above, I re-checked the wiring continuity and pinout details, but unfortunately I had the gender of the D25 connectors the wrong way around!

In my own defence, I was following the format for the D180 installation where-in all references to the gender of the connectors relate to the plug on the harness.

For reasons known only to the authors of the installation manual when they added Appendix C after the HS34 was introduced they decided to reverse that format and all gender reference in this section relates to the connector on the back of the unit itself, not the harness.

I know, I know . . . it is clearly stated on page 8-10 that this is the case, and I admit to having missed that, but I'm wondering why the change was made??

Can we call it a draw? ;)

Anyway, after rewiring I've now got a functioning HS34 with no apparent damage done.

BTW, thankyou for the info that all the HS34 lights will come on when first powered up and also that they then extinguish.

This is not noted anywhere I can find in the documentation - the only reference I could find was at the bottom of page 7-5 of the Pilots User Guide where it states exactly the opposite!!

"If the HS34 is not communicating on DSAB properly, both the NAV and GPS lights are illuminated.  During normal system operation both lights will never be illuminated simultaneously; dual illumination indicates a communication failure."

Might be an idea to add here . . ."except during initial power up of the HS34".

Cheers,

Rob
