D180 Remote Compass Installation in Jabiru 230D?

Hi,
I am just wondering if someone in the forum can help me with the mounting position of the D180 Remote Compass Module in a new factory built Jabiru 230D? When I quickly asked for the mounting position at the Factory Office, they said to just mount it under either the Pilots or the Passengers side seat. But upon closer inspection, it seems that you cannot access underneath either of these seats? They appear to be fully moulded in situ and you do not have any access to get beneath them unless you cut a hole somewhere in them?

Regards

We tend not to recommend under seats, since keys in your pocket, or other metal on your person may be close enough to cause interference. Generically, the two popular places on aircraft are in the rear fuselage or the wing or wingtip, following the guidelines in the manual about keeping it away from power and ferrous metal.

Re: D180 Remote Compass Installation in Jabiru 230

Graham,

I have a home built Jabiru 430 with the remote compass mounted in the tail boom.

As far as where in the seat it can be mounted I have seen/heard of them being mounted behind the seat in the hollow behind the seats. But I would agree entirely about not putting it under the seat. I know one guy who has shifted his because it gave problems with metal things and ?mobile phone in his pockets.

I made a fibreglass angled bracket that sits up on the side of the tailboom, horizontal flat surface screwed to the hollow strengthening rib with aluminum screws and upright surface epoxied to fuselage wall. Angles checked with a sprit level while installing.

I think I have a photo somewhere - if you want I can send a pic by private mail. Let me know.

John
