I have a (brand new) D180, all works fine, but when I connect my laptop to it to try to download logs etc. The update program says "instrument detected on COM 4" then "connecting to instrument" then "unintelligible data received". I have tried 3 different serial to USB cables, 4 different USB ports on the computer. I am using the 9-pin connector on the Dynon-supplied harness. What's the problem???

First, are you using the 3-wire, 9-pin cable that originates at the Male 25-pin connector on the FlightDEK-D180? On a FlightDEK-D180, because it is a combination EFIS/EMS, it has update cables, including the 3-wire 9-pin cable for both the EMS side and the EFIS side. For updates, the cable on the EMS side is inactive.

Second, are you sure that COM4 is the USB to Serial Adapter? Other devices in a laptop, such as Bluetooth interfaces, are also "COM ports" in a PC, so the Product Support Program may have "found" COM4 first and tried to use it.

Third, if you have a GPS and/or SL-30 NAV radio connected, if it's wired "in parallel" to the (EFIS) serial port on the FlightDEK-D180, they usually need to be disconnected to do a PC update as the extra connection "loads down" the serial port.

We explain all this, and much more, in a new mini-manual that we just posted to our documentation page - Dynon Support Program Guide and FAQ.
