Probably a dumb question from a newbie--if you install 2 d180 for redundancy can they both read the same engine probes?

Some probes, yes. The Tach, EGTs, thermocouple CHTs, amps, and maybe a few more can be shared.

Things like oil temp, oil pressure, and fuel level cannot be shared.

Most people install one D100 and one D180, which gives you redundant EFIS info, but only one EMS.

Although it's some considerable time away, I intend to install 2x180 - not much more cost than a 100 and 180. Connect engine probes to only one unit and run that as your EMS with pitot/static as back-up for EFIS using split screen. If the EMS unit fails, no biggie. Due to the nature of the senders, full backup is not possible and it's not get-you-home critical. Once you land, you can re-configure the single serviceable unit to run in dual mode till the other gets fixed.

Since the attitude requires IAS, you can only have true redundancy with a back-up pitot. I'm considering fitting the standard VANS unit in one wing as a back-up and the heated pitot/AoA in the other as main - but that may be a bit of overkill! Could maybe also use (say) the TruTrak ADI and Stratomaster joint ASI/ALT for triple redundancy with just 2 glass screens and 2 x 2 1/4 instruments and under $10,000 with all the fittings. Sweet!!

There was talk of Dynon doing a software upgrade to use GPS instead of pitot to give a back-up - any updates on that?

Please be aware there actually is a downside to installing two D180s. If you have a D100 and a D180, you can put the engine info on any screen.

If you have two D180s, all you can show on the D180 that has no engine probes is the EFIS and HSI. The engine page on the unconnected D180 will always show the local engine probes, which will be totally random.

If you're ok with this, then it will work fine. If you expect to be able to use our normal data sharing between the units, then you might have a problem.

We have no current plans to use GPS as a backup to airspeed. It has been talked about for sure, but we don't have any planned out project for it yet.
