D6 dark screen at power up on internal battery

D6 startup on internal battery only, screen is too dark to see. After half an hour, I attach an external 13.8 v source, it comes on bright and shows 14.3 volts internal battery charge. If I remove external power screen stays bright. Turn off, then comes on real dark again.
It's been about 50 degrees F in my garage, but that shouldn't affect it, should it?
Bad internal battery is all I can think of, even with the voltage showing over 14 v after long recharge? Rats, I haven't even gotten a chance to install it yet!
Any ideas?
