DG Recalibration

I've had my D100 coming up on 8 years and is running 5.5. On a recent trip the DG worked normally on my outbound flight. The next day I took off and noticed the DG was 30-40 degrees off on N/S directions and 20-30 degrees off on E/W. I landed and did the recalibration process and the DG is working correctly now.

My question -- it seems I need to recalibrate my DG every 12-18 months. Not a big deal but is this normal? If not, would 5.6 help?

The plane is a TL-Ultralight Sting S3 (LSA).

It should not need re-calibrating really ever, so that could possibly indicate an issue with the sensors in the magnetometer. The 5.6 update did involve improvements to the calibration routine, but it would mainly positively effect people that have a different calibration attitude than cruise attitude (ie, taildraggers). All that said, it wouldn't hurt to upgrade to it to see if it helps over the longer term.
