Attempting to download engine data into a PC using the Dynon support program and Dynon connector to USB, kept revealing no serial connection can be found using the EMS D9 plug. It tells me to turn off any other serial usages, of which there are none. This PC's only mission is to interact with Dynon. So I tried the EFIS D9 and it downloaded all data including engine and flight parameters in considerable scope and detail. I thought the EFIS would only supply flight data. Anyway, in trying to find the cause, I found the yellow/red/black Dsub inserts were not plugged into the D37 fitting, just loose there. After putting them in the correct 11,12, and 30 slots, it still did not work. Examining the EMS harness' D9 connector revealed the yellow wire was not inserted into the connector far enough. This is all with Dynon pre-wired harness BTW. Fixed that and tried again and still no luck, but downloading using the EFIS D9 works every time. Is there something on the EMS setup I am missing? Why would one (the EFIS) D9 work so well and the EMS D9 tell me no connectability?
D180 with 5.5 loaded. Arion Lightning/Jabiru 3300. thanks :-X

Although the D180 is an EFIS+EMS in one, all of the communication is done via the D25 "EFIS" connector. So the logs you get from that port will have both the EFIS and EMS data in them. If you had an EMS-D10 or D120, then you'd use the 9 pin on the D37 connector.

thank you! That explains everything. So, is there any use for the EMS D9 or should I just cut off the wires and rely totally the EFIS D9 for data logging and software updating? Thanks again, your timely response is appreciated. :)

With the D180 you use the D9 off the D25 for everything. You can leave the other D9 tucked away or cut it off or remove the wires from the D37 harness, it's up to you. If you cut, make sure to cap the wires, of course.

ANOTHER QUESTION, SAME SUBJECT: From pg 9-3 in D180 user guide: "Leaving RECORD AT BOOT option set to NO causes RECORDING option to be reset to OFF every time power is cycled. Setting to YES ensures logging begins at boot up".
I don't know the difference. Isn't "boot up" the same as initial power application. What I really want is the logging to start when the engine starts, such as RPM>0. As it is now, I have way too much data to edit.
My other question is- can I somehow edit (not log) those items not needed. e.g.- I do not monitor manifold or fuel pressure. Can I get it removed from the logged data, or am I stuck with hand editing the final downloaded data package? thanks…George André

There's no way to have the datalogging trigger off of the engine start/stop. It's either manually actuated (you have to turn it on manually when you want it if you have the RECORD AT BOOT option set to NO", or recording all the time. Similarly, yes, you'll need to filter the data post capture to kill rows and columns you're not interested in.
