Downsizing SV-GPS-250 Antenna

G'day guys,

Is there any scope for me to literally grind down the edges of the SV-GPS-250 antenna about 3/32" on each side? I would prefer to fit the antenna inside the upper fibreglass rudder fairing.  I'm trying to avoid an antenna farm on the glareshield ... and since the GTN-650 antenna is relatively 'enormous', there isn't a lot of room left !!  Outside isn't an option (unsightly, tandem seat, slider canopy and 200kts - so I don't want the extra drag).

Fly where there are tailwinds - go much faster then ;D Seriously, I think 3/32" won't matter from what I know of other types but Dynon will give a definitive answer.

I've seen folks who install GPS antennas under a fiberglass cowling near the top of the firewall. They seem to work well and I have not heard of any failures due to heat.

Mine's under the top of the instrument panel in my Europa - works well.

None of the electrical guts are near the edge of the GPS puck. That said, any damage caused by such a modification wouldn't be covered under warranty, of course.

Mine's under the cowling in an RV-8A on a bracket in the center of the firewall about an inch or so below the cowling. Picks up 8 satellites in my hangar where the GNS 430W (antenna on top of the glare shield) gets none. No problems in 100 hours or so. Jack L
