Duplicate targets on map

Probably an FAA problem, but flying today getting good ADS-B coverage, north of Los Angeles, one of the targets consistently and persistently showed up as *two* targets, one overlaid on the other.  It did this the entire time it was on the screen, which was a while as it was headed for the same airport I was.

I suspect two different paths to the traffic display system (perhaps one via ADs-B in/out, the other via TIS, or some such thing?) with slightly different data so the SV thinks they are two targets.

You can just barely see the second target arrow underneath the first one in the image below:

With the FAA's change around the first of the year, this behavior is expected in certain cases. If there's another airplane near you that has fully 2020 compliant ADS-B IN and OUT, and the target airplane has ADS-B OUT but that is still broadcasting SIL=0 (as did SkyView installs before the FAA made this change), this can happen. One of those targets is from ADS-B, and one is from TIS-B (radar).

That particular plane has a SkyView on board but is still running v13 or earlier. When he upgrades to v14 this would stop.

Sort of what I figured...thanks for the explanation!

I suspect in the next few years we're going to see lots of corner cases of traffic displays until everyone gets their equipment up to the 2020 spec...

This is less likely to happen as more SIL=1 (and fully 2020 compliant) ADS-B Out solutions get installed and as the SkyView and other fleet move away from the former SIL=0 designation that used to be the norm before the FAA made their changes earlier this year.

In the SkyView fleet, through 2019-12-31, if you have an SV-GPS-250, and update your SkyView to v14.0 or later, you'll be compliant enough (SIL/SDA=1) for the FAA to (reliably) send just ONE traffic return to you.

As of 2020-01-01, the SV-GPS-250 is no longer good enough to fly in rule airspace, and by then you'll have had to update to the SV-GPS-2020 or similar high integrity GPS receiver to continue to fly in rule airspace.
