Hello,

I have a D100 that I got used from somebody upgrading to a Skyview. It's installed and working great. I'd like to update the firmware but did not get a USB to Serial converter. :'(

Seems on the specs that the Dynon comes with one. Do I need the Dynon version or will any converter do?
Thanks,
Mark

There's nothing super special about Dynon's except it's the one we sell and know. Others should work (and often do) but we can't help out as much with any issues that come up if it's another converter. Every once in a while there are ones that don't seem to work, usually due to driver issues between the cable and whatever version of Windows you have.

Just an update.  I got a decent quality converter from Staples ($40) and did the update.  Used one of my old laptops with XP on it, just to be safe and it went well!  Nail biting for sure but pretty painless!  I was never a fan of serial connections though... Would Dynon have answered the phone at 9 PM eastern time... ?  LOL

Thanks for the help!

I'm confused as to whether I need a 9-pin or a 25-pin USB to Serial cable to upgrade firmwear on the D-120 EMS?

Everyone seems to have the 9-pin cable, yet the illustrations for the device show a 25-pin connection on the D-120. If I can use the 9-pin, where do I plug it in?

Thanks!

I am going from memory but there should be a 9 pin connector attached to the serial wires coming out of the 37 pin connector. The 25 pin connector is for the EGT/CHTs. On my harness I think the wires were orange, yellow and black. If the 9 pin connector is not attached to the serial out wires on the 37 pin connector, you will have to add them back in and run them to a 9 pin connector. If you dont already have it, download the installation manual for the D-120 EMS and it will show you the correct pins to connect to on the cable.

rvator51 is correct - for a Dynon Avionics harness. The Dynon Avionics harness for EFIS-D6, EFIS-D10A, EFIS-D60, EFIS-D100, FlightDEK-D180, EMS-D10, and EMS-D120 all include a 3-wire cable for updating firmware, etc. that terminates in a 9-pin female connector. Thus, to communicate with your unit, you need a USB to RS-232 serial adapter that has a 9-pin male connector.

If you bought the plane used, some builders build their own harness and don't include this cable. The unit will work fine without it, but you aren't able to update the unit in the panel.

I answered my own question... there's a 9 pin RS-232 on the wiring harness to plug into.
