I am attempting to clean up wiring installation done poorly by builder. I have D180. I find the cable from DB25 to the DB9 at the D10A, although shielded, it is not connected to ground at either end. It appears to be the Dynon harness as the color codes of the interior wires are correct. Quoting from page 4-3 of the installation manual says: "The metal shield around the EDC communication cable is connected to the short black/white wire emanating from the DB25. Connect this wire to ground." First of all, I cannot find a short black/white wire coming from the DB25. (that would be a black wire with white stripe, right?) Secondly, grounding this wire, even if I could find it, still does not ground the shielding around the cable.
Can't i just tap into the cable just outside the DB25 and connect a wire to the shielding and run it to a ground source?
As it sits now I am getting a correct heading display, but cannot imagine the cable should remain without the shielding being grounded somewhere. thanks

So there have been different variants of the harness, some with that short wire that's connected to the shield of the DB25. The longer story is that it actually wansn't in our spec - the data transmission requirement of the type of digital connection we use to the EDC doesn't require it. But, because it ended up on the harness, it doesn't hurt to ground it. So all that said, if you don't have the shield exposed, you don't need to work to expose and ground it. If you're getting heading, that's the ultimate test. Know that the communication isn't analog signals, so it's not like a "badly shielded" connection will cause the heading to slew or anything. If there's a problem with connectivity, you just won't see heading. So if you are seeing it, you're good.

What is the cost of my sending my D180 box in for complete checkout and update. I acquired this plane which had sat idle for too long and updates were never done since about 2006. I think I have about a 1.08 version. I might just save myself some grief by getting a factory checkout and repair if necessary. My wiring is a mess and I'd like to make sure the box is OK before I do too much wiring cleanup, etc..thanks

Maintenance of our products are generally "on condition" and don't require any periodic maintenance unless they're not performing as intended. Software updates are designed to be done in the field, but we're happy to do that here too. If you're within the 3 year warranty period, we'll do that complementary. Out of warranty, $100 for a full functional check-out / software upgrade / etc. If we find that there's anything not working to spec or if your product needs significant hardware updates to go through our current test/verification processes (all hardware of the same product is form/fit/function, but our test equipment and processes are sometimes not backwards-compatible with the oldest product hardware revisions, which you may have) the flat-rate repair fee is $250. Get in touch with our support team at 425-402-0433 or support at dynonavionics dot com if you'd like to set up an RMA to send in your D180.

George

FYI - I just done an upgrade from 1.08 to 5.5 without any issues, worked well ;)
