EFIS-D10A display on EMS-D10

I recently installed the latest firmware into both my EFIS-D10A and EMS-D10. As advertised, I can display EMS info on the EFIS, but not EFIS info on the EMS (even with the RS-232 connection in place). The EMS just reports that the EFIS is not detected. On a slightly related issue, when the two instruments are connected via the RS-232 my EFIS does not output encoder information to the transponder. My transponder only see the encoder when the RS-232 connection is broken. Has anyone seen this before? Everything else works very well.

Disregard above querry. I just figured out the problem. My RS-232 connection between the EMS and EFIS was made without the Radio Shack null modem connector. I'll go buy one and try it again.
