EGT Probe Placement

I have the Dynon Lycoming engine wiring package. Am now ready to drill holes in my exhaust pipes for the EGT probes. I have a Lycoming O-320, with an Aircraft-Exhaust stainless steel exhaust system on an RV-9A. From the install manual, Dynon does not recommend a precise position to drill the EGT hole from the engine exhaust flange . Speaking to Dynon's support person earlier, he said only the position for the Rotax engine is availabe, and advised me to contact my engine manufacturer for this information.

I have contacted Aerosport Power, and they in-turn tell me that the probe manufacturer supplies this information. Aircraft-Exhaust is saying the same thing. Would appreciate some guidance on this, as I have exhausted (no pun intended) my internet searches on this subject as well.

If Dynon is not able to supply an answer to this, then what have other builders with an O-320 done? Thanks.

Hi Al,

Tony Bingelis recommends 2 - 4" from the probe to the exhaust flange. It is important to get them all the same distance from the Flange and on a straight section of pipe. I have seen some as close as 1.5" from the flange. Mine are about 3" and work fine on an O-360. The exact distance is not critical, but should probably be in the range the Tony Bingelis recommends.

Thanks for the response, Mel. Looks like it will be 3" as well, since I have a bend in one of the exhaust headers shortly after that distance.

When we searched for our installation we were cautioned about being too close to the exhaust ports as the probes would burn in time. We elected to go farther away for this reason . We had flex flanges in our exhaust at the proper distance thus the farther distance.
