Hi Ernie,

The barometric pressure (mean sea level pressure) reported in the weather or by the tower is normalized to sea level for a given location. That allows everyone at that location -- regardless of altitude -- to refer to the same number.

When the engine is off, a manifold pressure gauge measures the BAP (barometric absolute pressure) at your location, thus your altitude now affects this number. My guess is that your current location is well above sea level and you are seeing the result of this discrepancy between MSLP and BAP.

The articles linked to below explain this in a bit more detail. If you are not significantly above sea level, or have other questions, feel free to reply with more clarification.

BAP - thanks for the refresher. I knew there was something I had missed ;)

We still have major fluctuations in the MAP display on our 912ULS installations. Any ideas on how to smoothen that ? We take the MAP on the balancer tube between the two carbs.

cheers

Ernie
