Encoder connection

I'm installing an EFIS D100 in a flying RV6. I have a GTX 327 connected to an ACK 350 encoder now. I'm told the Steinair harness will come with a single lead going to a pin in the back of the 327 for the encoder signal and the sub D connector from the GTX327 to the ACK350 should be disconnected. What benifets will I get or features will I loose by not using the built in encoder?

Larry,
The EFIS transponder output is an output only. The EFIS will have all the same features and functions if it connected to your transponder or not.

The biggest advantage to using the EFIS is that it saves you money in not needing to buy an encoder. If you already have an encoder, it's your choice which one you want to use. The only slight advantage to the EFIS is that you know what altitude you are outputting since the EFIS has a screen, but the 327 has a screen too, so that's not much help.

If the single connection to the GTX 327 is made (pin 13 on D100, connected to pin 19 on GTX 327), what should happen to pin 21 on the D100?

These two wires are grouped together in the Steinair harness.

This is for a new installation of D100 and GTX 327 only.

I have a D100 & GTX327.

Am I correct in thinking - from the forum info - a D100 can be connected directy to the GTX327 without a (Grey) serial to parallel converter?
Is the pinout - Pin 19 on GTX327 connected to Pin 13 on D100 & Pin 13 or 25 on GTX327 to pin 21 on D100.

Reason I am checking the pinout - the GTX Installation Manual Rev J on page 13 describes pin 19 as RS-232 IN 1 but on page 15 it's described as RS-232 IN 2!

Thanks,

Tim.

The D100 can be connected directly to the GTX327 without the encoder converter module.

I'm not familiar with the pinout on the Garmin, but EFIS pin 13 should go to a serial input on the Garmin transponder. EFIS pin 21 goes to a ground on the Garmin transponder.

When setting up the Garmin's serial input it needs to be set to accept ICARUS input on the serial input that the EFIS is connected to. The EFIS's ALTENC setting should be set to protocol 1 ... correction - protocol 4.
