External Compass not found

I have just unpacked my D-100 for installation in my panel, and I get the message "External Compass Not Found" I am using the Approach Systems hub and cabling system, and I have the D-100 encoder talking to my transponder with no problems. Also, all the other features of the D-100 appear to be fine - interface to the PC, etc.

Can you give me any guidance on what to do next?

Pat,
This means it cannot see the EDC-D10A. This is a small aluminum box with a DB-9 connector on it that should have come with your D-100. This is the magnetic sensor for the D100 and should be installed somewhere in the plane that doesn't expereience a lot of magnetic interference.

We bring up this warning because we have no heading info without the EDC connected and we don't want you to rely on old or false information.

Does the AS hub have a port and long wires to hook up the EDC and have you done so?

Hi,

Yes, there are four pins on a long cable which I attached to the D10A according to the diagrams from the Dynon and the AS documentation. I have not seen the D100 find the D10A as yet, although I have cycled power with it connected, and reloaded the firmware as well. If you wish, I can scan the AS pin-out and send it to you.

Per the installation guide, you should check and make sure that each of these pin pairs has continuity from end to end:

EFIS 25 pin Compass 9 pin
11 5
12 6
23 9
24 1

It is possible that these 4 wires are not connected to the appropriate pins.

Hi,

I found a pin mis-labled by the continuity check (or maybe I mis-understood their nomenclature) - anyway, it now works!

One other question - Isn't the internal battery supposed to charge itself when connected to an external souirce? My system showed the "low battery" alert, and I hooked both the power and keep alive circuits to a 12V car battery which shows 13.2 V on the EFIS display. Yet, the internal battery shows 0.0 volts after being attached all night. Any checks that I can do?

0V on the battery display indicates that the EFIS does not see the battery at all. Try disconnecting and reseating the battery connector, which is behind the removable plate on the back of the unit. If the battery still shows 0V, there is either something wrong with the battery or the EFIS and they'd need to come back for warranty repair.

Thanks for the reply - reseatiing the battery did the trick, and I now have a fully functional D-100! (I think it probably got un-seated by the shipping process.
