[Cross-posted from Van's Air Force forum.  Lot of views but no responses.]

Helping a friend update the SkyView in his not-yet-flying RV-12 to 12.0. Downloaded the latest bits from the Van's Aircraft web site, dutifully unZIPped the .DUC file and put it on a USB flash drive. The update process began normally but repeatedly met with this:

LoadFailed.jpg

The current version is 4.0.1 and shipped with the unit. I've tried multiple thumb drives, multiple USB sockets on the SkyView,
and even the generic 12.0 update .DUC file on the Dynon Avionics web site.

Do I need to update to some sort of intermediate version before 12.0? What am I missing here?

Thanks,
Joe

I didn't unzip the .DUC file itself but rather I unzipped the folder of files and extracted the .DUC file, placed it in the root directory of the USB flash drive and attempted to install it.  No luck.

Also, no luck downloading from that link you supplied (that's what I was referring to in the second paragraph).

Regardless of the source of the file used to do the update, the process would appear to start normally but quickly error out with the above error screen and 4.0.1 still installed.

This is in an under-construction Van's Aircraft RV-12.  There are autopilot servos (not connected), an ADAHRS, but no Dynon radio or autopilot accessories.  As I mentioned, I used two different flash drives and a variety of USB sockets on the SkyView system.

Any more ideas, please?

Thanks.  But "not unzipping anything" is what I did on my very first attempt and nothing showed up on the File Load menu.  Apparently files to be loaded need to be in the USB drive's root directory.

The "readme" file on Van's Aircraft (http://vansaircraft.com/public/download/RV-12/SkyView/SV-PRE-SETS-READ-ME-03-04-15.pdf) states:

Step 1: Go to the downloads page of the Van’s Aircraft web site and download 12-SV12.0-
Software&Settings.zip

Step 2: Extract the .duc file and .dfg files from the zip file. Place the files on a USB memory stick. Do not
place the files in a folder.

And the solution is ...

Steve at Dynon Support suspected the 4.0.1 software was not capable of loading a .DUC (combined update) file.  Apparently that feature was added later.  So any effort using the package on the Van's Aircraft web site (preferred) or Method 1 on the Dynon download page (theoretically also acceptable) was doomed to failure.

The solution was to use the individual software update file, a .DUP file, Method 2 on the Dynon site and after success, load the Van's Aircraft .DUC file for good measure.

And the "DISK REMOVED" error diagnostic always was a red herring (as suspected).

There's a trap for young players! Perhaps an email to Vans might be in order so they can throw that on their website to save someone else the heartache? ;)

Thanks for the thought. It's a balancing act. SkyView v4.0 was released August, 2012 and the number of SkyView displays out there with firmware that old is rapidly trending to 0, so do you put a prominent notice that everyone feels compelled to read, but only applies to a handful of people? We struggle with this in trying to provide full details for downloading firmware, but if the notice gets to be too long, many choose to just skip reading it at all.
