Flying a practice RNAV and the HSI 5nm limitation

Hi there,

My plane is not IFR certified but I do have GPS and WAAS. I like to fly RNAV approaches just for fun, but when I do I notice that the HSI only shows 5 nm deviation. Is there a way to make that HSI more sensitive so I can use it more accurately when flying these practice approaches? I Keep it centered (but with that much range it’s not hard to do) and having the HITS boxes helps a ton too. Anyway, whatever info y’all have is great. Thanks!

I have seen the 5nm indication change to 1nm when flying in OBS mode but not always and may not be due to OBS mode. So I know it can change, but cannot figure out how and why it works.
