G meter and general comments

First, I would like to start by saying great job. I just got my 10" Skyview system and had the AHARS, EMS and GPS all hooked up and running in about 45 minutes. The syn vision and overall functionality are spectacular. Skyview is a very good value.

I was looking around for some documentation on the AHARS G meter and did not see any right off hand. The most I can get it to register by hand is a very repeatable 6.5G so I suspect this is the natural limit of the sensor. My first question is what is the operating limit of the G sensor? Secondly, if it is 6.5G is it possible to use an external G sensor (like a +/-25G Crossbow) as the data source for the G meter display? The plane is rated at +/-14G (which is meaningless as I seem to be rated at about +9 and -3.5) so I need a bit more than 6.5.

So the full answer is a bit complicated.

First, the G meter is damped, so in your hand, you may not be able to sustain a load that will cause the meter to get up to higher Gs

Next, the G meter sensors have different performance over temperature. In the very worst case (when extremely cold), the G meter will read +/- 6 G. At room temperature (of the ADAHRS), it's more like 10 G. Currently, there's no way to discern where the "limit" is visually. So if you want to be conservative and ensure that you never pull Gs that SkyView isn't showing you, consider it a +/- 6 G meter. We're currently investigating this phenomenon further and will have more info soon on what we might do to address it.

Thanks for the response Admin. The AHARS is in the cockpit so it is reasonably warm most of the time.

Any luck on the second part of the question regarding an external G source routed to the meter? I just happen to have a +/- Crossbow unit laying around from a previous project.

There isn't currently a way to bring in external ADAHRS or G meters.

Fair enough...
Thanks for letting the ball work inverted for us challenged on the coordination side of life :)

Please let me know if you allow the importing of overall G data from an external input pin in the future.
