Garmin 296 to D-180

I connected my Garmin 296 to my D180 by connecting the Garmin’s “Data Out 2” (which outputs NMEA data) to D-180 thru Pin #22 on the DB25 (which is also Pin #3 on the DB9).

I understand, these pins receive NMEA data and will be able to receive the Garmin output thereby displaying HSI info.

I also made sure the instruments share a common ground.

Do I need to do anything else?

In the 296, under the advanced NMEA setup menu, make sure the data rate is set to "normal", not "fast".

Also, if your FlightDEK-D180 was purchased prior to October, you can opt to update the firmware on your unit by going to this link and downloading the latest version of the support program

I noticed in the Garmin setup ... you have to set up the 296 to output NMEA data. You can do that for either com1 or com2 ... but NOT for both. Do you know which "com" output I am using? I am using the NMEA data wire that comes off the power plug (not the USB interface).

Is that considered com1 or com2 ... the Garmin website has NO info on it.

It looks like Data Out 2, which is a violet wire, is what you're after. See page 134 of the 296 manual on Garmin's site here

Hello Xenon,
This is the answer of garmin concerning the wiring:

Thank you for contacting Garmin(Europe)Ltd.

Use the Blue wire for the data out and you will have to connect the
black to ground aswell.

Kind regards
Gareth Thomas Garmin (Europe) Ltd

That was for the 296 to a D100

Francis.

If I can confirm the above advice.

Update all the firmwares, both 296 and the dynon.

I have the same setup and had quite a bit of trouble until I updated the 296 firmware.  As did a couple of other posters.

The major problem was having the HSI get "stuck" on various headings and not change when a new heading/waypoint is taken up.

If I can just modify my last post - I confirm the advice about updating all the firmware, but I just have checked wiring set up and I don't agree with the advice given by Garmin !!!

Their own diagram (as correctly stated by Dynonsupport) is for the output wiring via the violet wire (NOT the blue one).

My set up -which works - is using the violet wire.
So I am not sure why they would tell Xenon to use the sounder wire output (blue). ? someone having a bad day or misinterpretted the question - maybe it will work but I doubt it.

Well getting the wire right is a prerequisite of course, but once you have that figured out, make sure the GPS output format includes "NMEA" data and that the data rate is set to "normal", not fast. As for baud rate, either 4800 or 9600 will do.
