Garmin 396/496 update rate over serial to D100/180

I’m under the impression that the 496 updates it’s position five times per second vs once per second for the 396 (5 Hz vs 1 Hz). Is the higher refresh rate for the 496 reflected in the serial data stream (or is the 9600 baud connection too slow to allow a performance advantage)?

I’m wondering if the higher update rate of the 496 has a positive effect on winds aloft updates on the D100/180?

Thanks.

We accept data whenever we get it, but for winds to be accurate, we do a lot of filtering, so you won't notice any real change in the update rate there. We had to assume that the data comes in at 1Hz, and apply our filters and methods based on that.
