Instructions say to use a 30way switch and connect the output to pin 22 on the EFIS. I'm not very familiar with a 3-way switch designation, so my question is will a on-on switch work or do I need to use a on-off-on type of switch (both are DPDT types of switches, I think)? If either will work, what benefit would there be to using a on-off-on type switch?

You can use a two position, on-on switch. Having the "off" position won't hurt anything, but it won't buy you anything.

What you actually need is a SPDT switch. This means single pole, double throw.

"poles" are the number of circuits switched by the switch. In this case, you're only switching the one serial line, so only one pole is needed. If you have xtra poles, you just leave them disconnected.

"throw" is how many positions the switch has. In this case, you need two, one for GPS and one for SL-30.

DPDT, SPDT, DPST, etc, don't tell you how the switch acts, such as on-off-on, or just on-on. They just tell you what the switch can switch.
