I'm connecting a G296 and an SL30 to my D100 via the RS232 connections. While at my local avionics shop getting other questions answered the technician I talked to drew a simple schematic of the hook up between to three units. My switch of choice for doing the job was a single pole double throw center off switch and was simply going to have the send wire from G296 and the SL30 connected to opposite sides of the switch with the D100 in the center off position. My grounds were basically just going to ground. What he showed me was a double pole double throw center off switch with the grounds from each unit also connected to the other side of the switch thus also turning the grounds on and off as needed. He said it was to prevent ground loops from occurring. My question is, is this really necessary
