I just ordered my D1 and would like to have a a connection wired into my panel rather than use the cigar lighter as power. This is going on a Van's RV6A. Please advise.
Thank you :)

So the D1 needs 5V DC. It can't take 12/24V aircraft power directly. So first, that means that you can't just cut off the male end of the cigarette lighter adapter and wire it directly to aircraft power, as that will then put 12V into the D1. Doing this WILL damage it (and there are warnings all over the manual about only using Dynon power adapters with the D1.

What you can do, though, is get something like this, which you then connect to your unaltered D1 cigarette lighter adapter. You then connect its bare wire ends to your aircraft power. Voila!

Nope. Nothing to do with battery chemistry. It's simply that the D1 requires 5V, and any accessory made for it is designed to provide that. So modifying the vehicle charger by cutting off the active components which turn your aircraft 12V/24V into 5V then lets 12/24V directly into the D1, which will overwhelm its power supply components.
